Ram 1500 Pickup History | Covington, GA

The Ram 1500 pickup truck continues to be one of the most efficient trucks loaded with features in today's market. Though the Ram 1500 is a pure Ram product now, it got its start as a Dodge-branded vehicle back in 1981. Dodge had produced trucks before the Ram, dating back to 1917, but the Ram name came on the scene in the 80s.

The first Dodge Ram featured three engines: a 3.7-liter engine creating 95 horsepower, a 5.2-liter V8 producing 140 horsepower, and a 5.9-liter V8 generating 170 horsepower.

1994 was the second generation of the Ram pickup truck. Ram restyled the truck and gave it a new engine lineup. During this period, Ram began to use the 1500 name along with the 2500 and 3500 names to distinguish size and power. When these trucks entered the automotive industry, some of their engines earned best-in-class payload and towing ratings. Dodge even produced a turbo-diesel engine-something that has kept the Ram 1500 ahead of the competition for decades, as Ford and Chevy trucks are now starting to offer diesel options.

Dodge reimagined the Ram 1500 in 2002, but it kept much of what everyone loved about the truck. During this third generation, the Ram 1500 began to offer features like Bluetooth® connectivity and a navigation system. By the time the third generation ended in 2008, the Ram 1500 had a 4.7-liter V8 producing 310 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque.

The current generation of the Ram 1500 began in 2009 ― the same year Ram broke off from Dodge as its own brand. During this generation, Ram introduced powerful HEMI® engines for the Ram 1500 and has pushed boundaries to continue the truck's distinction as the most fuel-efficient and sophisticated option in its class.
